We opted to take an Uber into DC. The traffic is killing me and we werent feeling brave enough to take the WMART thingy. We hoped that leaving the hotel at 7am would beat some of the traffic but we were wrong again. A lot of white knuckles later our Uber driver dropped us at Arlington National Cemetery. It really is striking how many graves are there. The neatly lined rows of white headstones rise and fall with the hills of grass for as far as one can see. At the top of the hill is the tomb of the unknown soldier. Its quite something to watch the guard pace back and forth in a well worn path always at attention. the ceremony to change guards is a show of discipline and coordination.
Starting our walking tour we headed toward the Lincoln Memorial. On the 8 mile route of DC we would see the Lincoln Memorial, The Martin Luther King Memorial, The Korean War Memorial, The WWII memorial, the national mall and monument, the museum of natural history, the national art museum, the capital building and the white house. There was even a protest happening, of what they were protesting we arent sure, but they were passionate about it. It was 91 in DC today and HUMID. Of course Becca's hair loved it, but all of us, not so much.
I think my favorites were the Lincoln Memorial, the Martin Luther King Memorial and of course the national mall where Forrest and Jenny meet at the rally in Forrest Gump. I tried to get my husband to run out and call to me, but he declined. We were able to glimpse the hope diamond today as well as a painting by Leonardo DaVinci. Pretty cool!
We thought it best to jump in another Uber by 2:30 in order to "beat the traffic". This time it worked a bit better and we were back at our hotel and heading north to Pennsylvania by 3. It felt good to be heading north and away from the cities for awhile. We had dinner at a tiny pub tonight with really good food and we are all exhausted and ready for a day in the woods tomorrow!
